I think my problem is that I try too hard to make myself un-boring and un-annoying, and end up becoming so.
So, one of my roommates pretty much randomly announced that she’s studying abroad next semester. Which is cool for her. I mean, archeological dig in Ethiopia vs. classes on campus? I know which one I’d rather do.
That does mean we’ll be getting a random roommate starting after the holidays, though. I really hope we’ll get along, and that she can look past my quirkiness, tendency to obsess over one thing for months and months, and social awkwardness. Probably not, though. Most new people my age that I meet face-to-face don’t really give me the chance. Finding other girls offline who are into truly nerdy stuff can also be fairly difficult. Fortunately, HvZ has helped tremendously in that regard, so I do have lots of friends here, but…
I dunno. Maybe she’ll be perfect. Maybe she’ll unpack a Nerf gun and a plush Companion Cube, and we’ll be instant fandom sisters. Maybe she’ll curl up her lip at my BioShock posters and we’ll hate each other all semester long. Either way, since my other roommate and I have known each other since the seventh grade, and we’ve been rooming together since last year, it’s going to be an awkward couple of weeks at the beginning of the semester. And a really awkward first meeting.
